We the undersigned call on all delegates at TUC Congress to support resolution 37 – Wages not Warfare.
The UK is the 6th richest country in the world, yet millions live in poverty, our schools are crumbling, and public services have been decimated. It’s not only unjust – its damaging for our economy and society.
Despite this, the government is massively ramping up military spending at the expense of the welfare state – refusing to lift the two-child benefit cap, attacking pensioners and disabled people.
War is not the answer to our problems. It just means more of our money lining the pockets of defence companies and funding disastrous military activities like the Gaza genocide.
Real security doesn’t come from rearmament or endless wars. It comes from investing in our communities, rebuilding public services, providing decent wages, a strong welfare state and a liveable planet.
We believe the TUC should put wages and welfare before warfare by:
i. reversing the 2022 policy supporting “immediate increases in defence spending.”
ii. campaigning for increased public investment in services decimated by austerity.
iii. committing to a safe and liveable planet.
iv. reaffirming the movement’s explicit priority is welfare and wages – not weapons and war.
