Why the war on Iran is just plain wrong

OPINION – Iran, Trump, Starmer, media

To prevent getting too far out on a limb, correspondents should please note:

  1. Even when carried out by a western power an unprovoked attack on another country is illegal and can be met with at least a ton of disapproval.
  2. Just because Donald Trump dislikes something (eg international law, history, democracy, basic human decency) it doesn’t mean you have to completely forget about it.
  3. It’s OK to have the attitude that killing people is in general a bad thing (even if it’s being done by the US, Israel, or, god forbid, Britain).
  4. Iranians are people.
  5. ‘Might is right’ is normally used in a critical sense, not as moral/political/editorial guidance.
  6. You don’t have to limit your critique of the war on Iran to questions of practicality. (What is the endgame? What comes next?). Regime change through bombing is illegal and not very democratic when you think about it.
  7. The US is not part of the Middle East (meaning it doesn’t have a right to any of the oil or gas there).
  8. Britain is not part of the Middle East (meaning any ‘strikes’ there cannot be ‘defensive’).
  9. Recent events in the US have cast some doubt on the idea that its government is entirely driven by concerns over freedom and democracy.
