The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Stop the War Coalition utterly condemn US President Donald Trump’s latest threats of illegal military aggression against Iran. Any military assault on Iran could trigger an absolutely catastrophic war across the Middle East.
The US has deployed a massive military force to the region, including the nuclear-powered USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, F35 fighter jets and B52 nuclear-capable bombers. Britain has also sent Typhoon jets to Al Udeid base in Qatar.
Trump has stated “Like with Venezuela”, the US is “ready, willing, and able to rapidly fulfill its
mission, with speed and violence, if necessary.”
It is clear that Trump is seeking regime change in Iran through more brutal military attacks and
economic coercion.
These threats to Iran must be stopped. We all remember the horror of the US-led illegal war on
Iraq – a country half the size of Iran – in which over half a million people were slaughtered and
millions displaced.
We call on the British government to rule out any military involvement in an attack on Iran and to
deny the US permission to use the Diego Garcia base on the Chagos Islands.
If the US goes ahead with illegal military aggression, CND and Stop the War urge all those who oppose this to join an emergency protest at Downing Street.
