“I fear the world is not sleepwalking into a wider war. I fear it is doing so with its eyes wide open.”
– António Guterres, 2023

The world is becoming ever more unstable. It is impossible to predict where the next conflict will come. It is not only the US-Israeli war in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran but also Trump’s tightening embargo on Cuba and the EU and Britain fuelling the war in Ukraine.
As the USA loses its economic dominance to China, it is choosing to use its uncontested military superiority to maintain its global dominance.
In December, NATO countries, including the UK, were bullied into increasing their military expenditure to 5% of their GDP. War fever is being fed by pro-military pressure groups to put the drive for armaments expenditure before welfare.
These developments are taking place in the context of a climate crisis and the looming threat of a severe economic recession. Wars and arms expenditure are a disaster for the planet, its climate and its inhabitants. But if we are to oppose them, we need to campaign for political alternatives.
