1) BLAIR'S LAST DAY:
JOIN MILITARY FAMILIES AGAINST THE WAR
PROTEST IN DOWNING STREET
WEDNESDAY 27 JUNE 10AM 12 NOON

Military Families Against the War, representing families who have lost relatives in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, will be in Downing Street on Tony Blair's last day in office, Wednesday 27 June. They will be holding pictures of their loved ones who have died as a result of Tony Blair's war crimes. The Military Families are inviting everyone who is able to join them to come to Downing Street between 10am and 12 noon, when Blair will leave for the last time. Stop the War Coalition will be supporting their protest, to help ensure that Blair's last day is marked by a protest against his war policies, which have lead to the deaths of up to one million Iraqis, countless Afghan civilians, 152 British soldiers in Iraq and 61 soldiers in Afghanistan.

Rose Gentle, whose son Gordon was killed in Iraq almost exactly two years ago, says, "Let our photos be the last thing Blair sees when he leaves number 10."

In the afternoon, the Military Families will hand a letter for Gordon Brown into Downing Street, asking him to meet the families of those soldiers who have died in Iraq, a request which Tony Blair has turned down repeatedly over the past three years.

******************************
2) OVER 5000 DEMONSTRATE IN MANCHESTER
5000 protestors marched up to the Labour Party special leadership conference on Sunday 24 June, to insist that the first thing Gordon Brown does when he takes office is to change government policy on Iraq and bring the troops home now.

Stop the War national Andrew Murray told the demonstration, "We are here to wave goodbye to the most dangerous and warmongering prime minister in modern British history and to demand that he takes his policies with him. The Pope may forgive Tony Blair but the British people will not. We are demanding that Gordon Brown gives us a fresh start by pulling troops out of Iraq and breaking with George Bush's foreign policy."

3) WHERE CAN TONY BLAIR GO NOW?
Where Tony Blair should go, is straight to a war crimes tribunal. In the immediate future what beckons is speeches at a fee of 100,000 a time and a multi-million pound advance for his memoirs. Other options being suggested are discussed by Geoffrey Wheatcroft in this article:

Stop the War: IMPORTANT CORRECTION

STOP THE WAR COALITION
NEWSLETTER No. 1009
T: 020 7278 6694
Web: www.stopwar.org.uk

IMPORTANT CORRECTION TO THE DEMONSTRATION DATE IN OUR LAST NEWSLETTER
The date of the anti-war demonstration at the Labour leadership conference, is SUNDAY 24 JUNE and NOT Saturday 24 June, as publicised in Newsletter 1009. The newsletter item should have read as below. Our apologies for any confusion.

AN ANTI-WAR MESSAGE FOR GORDON BROWN
Manchester police have backed down on their insistence that the route of the Stop the War demonstration on SUNDAY 24 JUNE should be kept away from the special Labour leadership conference, at which Gordon Brown will be installed as Labour Party leader. Our march will now pass very close to the conference venue (see below for route details). The demonstration will call for a CHANGE OF POLICY NOT JUST A CHANGE OF LEADER, specifically:
* Troops out of Iraq now
* No attack on Iran
* Break the British government's link with US foreign policy

There will be a very large media presence at this conference, so it is important we have a good turnout. The demonstration will ensure that the voice of the anti-war majority in this country is heard. The protest will include a NAMING THE DEAD ceremony at which we will commemorate the deaths of Iraqis, now estimated to be up to one million, and of British soldiers who have been killed in an illegal and unnecessary war.

There are coaches coming to the protest from around the country and many local Stop the War groups have made group travel arrangements by public transport. Please join this demonstration if you can and spread the word as widely as possible.

2) MAKE BLAIR'S LAST DAY AN ANTI WAR DAY
PROTEST AT DOWNING STREET WED 27 JUNE
Tony Blair says it is not Iraq that has made him so unpopular. MPs in his own party say he is in denial and self-delusional. Military Families Against the War, supported by Stop the War Coalition, are planning to correct him on Wednesday 27 June, the day he leaves office and is replaced by Gordon Brown.

Their protest at Downing Street from 10am aims to make sure that Blairs last day in office is marked by his true legacy. For many of the military families this has meant the loss of their loved ones due to the Bush-Blair war crimes. For the Iraqi people it has meant the complete destruction of their country and up to one million killed, with over four million one in seven of the population becoming refugees since the invasion in 2003.

Tony Blair will leave Downing Street on the morning of 27 June. Brown will enter in the afternoon, when Military Families will hand him a letter asking him to meet them, a request that Blair has turned down repeatedly over the past three years.

Stop the War will be publishing more details and timings shortly. Military Families Against the War are asking for the widest possible support for their protest from the anti-war movement. Please check the Stop the War website for updated information.

1) StWC CHALLENGES POLICE ON 24 JUNE PROTEST
Stop the War Coalition is organising an anti-war demonstration at the special Labour conference in Manchester on Sunday 24 June, at which Gordon Brown will become party leader, before being installed as prime minister three days later. Coaches will bring protestors from across the country to call for a change of policy to go with the change of leader. Our slogans will be: Troops Out of Iraq Now, No Attack on Iran and Break the British government's link with US foreign policy.

Stop the War learned this week that the Manchester Police want to stop anti-war protestors getting within earshot of the leadership conference, keeping us a quarter of a mile from the venue. The police claim we represent a security threat. In practice they are trying to hide Gordon Brown from a protest which will represent the voice of majority opinion in this country. According to the latest poll only 14 percent of British people support the Iraq war.

Walter Wolfgang, Labour Party NEC member says, The polices position is unacceptable. Millions want a speedy withdrawal from Iraq. It is outrageous to try to keep them away from our conference." Stop the War will insist that the police cannot be used to shield the government from the public. In the words of our national convenor, Lindsey German, "We will not be a silent majority. We insist on our right to march near the conference."

2) ENOUGH! DEMONSTRATION REMINDER
Saturday 9 June 2007 is designated the international day of action for Palestinians under the slogan: "The World Says No to Israeli Occupation". The demonstration in London will mark the 40-year anniversary of the Six Day War, in which the Israeli army took military control of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Please ensure that all Stop the War supporters are encouraged to join this very important protest, at which the speakers will include Mustafa Barghouti, Palestinian Minister of Information.

3) EMAIL YOUR MP ABOUT IRAQ DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT
On Monday 11 June, there will be a full debate in the House of Commons on the call for an inquiry into the Iraq war. Every MP should be lobbied by telephone and email to urge them to support an inquiry on the war which has had such horrific consequences for the Iraqi people and is now causing a higher rate of casualties among British soldiers than at any time since the invasion in 2003.

FOR YOUR MP'S EMAIL ADDRESS GO TO:
http://www.writetothem.com/

TO CONTACT YOUR MP BY TELEPHONE:
You can telephone your MP's office at the House of Commons by telephoning 020 7219 3000 and asking to be connected to the appropriate MP's office.

******************************************
4) AFGHANISTAN LEAFLET RE-PRINTING
It's by no means certain that Gordon Brown will scale down the British army's presence in Iraq, but if he does, he will aim to re-deploy them to another unwinnable war in Afghanistan, where British troops are being killed at an ever increasing rate. Stop the War is reprinting its recent leaflet AFGHANISTAN BRING THE TROOPS HOME, which sold out within a few weeks of publication. To pre-order the leaflet at 3.50 per 100 copies, phone the Stop the War office on 020 7278 6694.

5) IRAQ WAR QUIZ QUESTION

WHO NOW SAYS: "The campaign in Iraq is not worth the death of another single further British or American serviceman. I personally believe that the presence of American and British forces is making things worse, not only in Iraq, but in the wider area around Iraq. The argument against staying for any greater length of time strengthens with every day that passes."?

ANSWER: Sir Christopher Meyer, who, as British ambassador to the US in 2002-3, was one of the most prominent government voices calling for war against Iraq.
SEE http://tinyurl.com/26q7av

Meyer is echoed by a serving officer in Iraq, who says many in the British army feel like him, that the war is ""illegal, immoral, and unwinnable" and they say what they are doing in Iraq is "loathsomeproviding target practice for insurgents, senselessly hemorrhaging casualties and squandering soldiers' lives, as part of Bush's vain attempt to delay the inevitable Anglo-US rout until after the next US election."

6) ANTI-WAR MUSIC VIDEOS
There are a number of new anti-war music videos on the Stop the War website, including tracks by Richard Thompson, Arcade Fire, Cake and
Bruce Springsteen.
