Israeli Embassy Protest cancelled ISRAEL EMBASSY PROTEST CANCELLED SATURDAY 19 AUGUST 2PM (Note other Day of Action Events round the country will take place as advertised. See http://tinyurl.com/q3y4k) The protest planned for the Israeli Embassy in London on Saturday 19 August has been cancelled. The rebuilding of Lebanon has begun. The Israeli Defence Forces are leaving the country that they barely occupied but tried to break through aerial bombardment. This was Bush and Blairs war as much as Israels. They gave Israel the green light to continue the attacks on the Lebanon, which killed more than 1,000, injured many thousands more and destroyed the countrys infrastructure. This is a serious setback for the US/UK project of reordering the Middle East. The London meeting with Lebanese journalist Omar Nachabe will take place as advertised. This will be an opportunity to listen to an eye-witness account of recent events in Lebanon and to hear speakers on the political implications. FRIDAY 18 AUGUST 6.30 ALL-LONDON PUBLIC MEETING EYEWITNESS REPORT FROM LEBANON THE POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS OF RECENT EVENTS Speakers include: OMAR NACHABE, Senior journalist Beirut newspaper Al-Akhbar, eyewitness to Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon TONY BENN, President, Stop the War Coalition JEREMY DEAR, Gen Sec, National Union of Journalists LINDSEY GERMAN, Convenor, Stop the War Coalition Friends Meeting House, Euston Road, London WC1 (Opposite Euston Station) OMAR NACHABE is also speaking in Manchester and Liverpool. If the UN Resolution 1701 helps stop the killing in Lebanon and Israel, it is to be welcomed. The chances are slim because the resolution was co-written by Israel and has all the elements needed for Israel to continue its barbaric attacks, which have killed over 1100 civilians in Lebanon, one third of them children, and destroyed much of the country's infrastructure. The resolution calls on Israel to end "offensive military operations" but Israel did not name its army the Israeli Defence Force for nothing. Throughout its history it has insisted that all of its military activities have been acts of "self defence". The resolution makes no mention of the countless war crimes Israel has committed over the past month, for example those under the Nuremberg Charter, which make Israel guilty of "crimes against peace" for "the wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages, or devastation not justified by military necessity" and guilty of "crimes against humanity" through the perpetration of acts of "murder,... and other inhumane acts committed against any civilian population, before or during the war...". Omar is a senior journalist from the Beirut newspaper Al-Akhbar and an eyewitness to Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon. Other speakers include Tony Benn and Jeremy Dear, General Secretary of the National Union of Journalists. ALL-LONDON PUBLIC MEETING: HANDS OFF LEBANON FRIDAY 18 AUGUST 6.30PM: FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE EUSTON ROAD, LONDON WC1 (opposite Euston Station) Speakers include: OMAR NACHABE - eyewitness to Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon; TONY BENN - Stop The War President; JEREMY DEAR - Gen Sec National Union Of Journalists; LINDSEY GERMAN - Stop The War Convenor. See also: http://tinyurl.com/q3y4k ****************************************** 3) SATURDAY 19 AUGUST: DAY OF ACTION Hezbollah has said consistently that it will stop firing its rockets, if Israel stops its destruction of Lebanon and removes all its military from the country. Israel's only response has been to intensify its aggression and it now has 30,000 soldiers occupying southern Lebanon. There can be no peace in Lebanon or Israel until there is an unconditional ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of all Israel troops. This is why Stop the War has organised a PROTEST AT THE ISRAELI EMBASSY in London at 2pm on Saturday 19 August (see below), calling for Israel to get out of Lebanon and Gaza. ALL-LONDON PROTEST: ISRAELI EMBASSY ISRAEL OUT OF LEBANON AND GAZA SATURDAY 19 AUGUST 2PM HIGH ST KENSINGTON / KENSINGTON PALACE GARDENS W8 (Nearest Tube: High Street Kensington) LOCAL DAY OF ACTION EVENTS We are also calling on all Stop the War groups outside London to make Saturday 19 August a day of action against Israel's continuing attacks and occupation of Lebanon. FOR DETAILS OF LOCAL EVENTS, GO TO: http://tinyurl.com/q3y4k ****************************************** 4) TERROR PLOT: WHATS REALLY GOING ON How convenient. As the Bush/Blair wars in Iraq and Afghanistan sink ever further into mass slaughter and chaos, as the Bush and Blair supported Israeli attack on Lebanon achieves none of the warmongers aims and provokes worldwide revulsion and as Israels daily brutality against defenceless Palestinians in Gaza intensifies, without a hint of condemnation from Bush and Blair, along comes "another 9/11", aimed at justifying the "war on terror" and at diverting the media's attention from the disasters of the Bush/Blair foreign policy. Former British ambassador, Craig Murray, who knows from the inside more than most about the spin machine behind the "war on terror", says, "This is more propaganda than plot. Of the over one thousand British Muslims arrested under anti-terrorist legislation, only twelve per cent are ever charged with anything. That is simply harassment of Muslims on an appalling scale. Of those charged, 80% are acquitted. Most of the very few - just over two per cent of arrests - who are convicted, are not convicted of anything to do terrorism, but of some minor offence the Police happened upon while trawling through the wreck of the lives they had shattered. Be sceptical. Be very, very sceptical." TO READ CRAIG MURRAY'S ARTICLE IN FULL, GO TO: http://tinyurl.com/zuccr Whatever the truth of the latest terrorism alert, George Bush and Tony Blair's aim in the media frenzy they have orchestrated over the last week is, in the words of writer Jonathan Cook, "less about fighting terrorism and more about silencing those who dissent from the West's endless wars against the Middle East." TO READ JONATHAN COOK'S ARTICLE IN FULL, GO TO: http://tinyurl.com/htwc9 ****************************************** 5) ALL ROADS LEAD TO MANCHESTER The recent events in Lebanon and Gaza highlight yet again the necessity for ending Tony Blair's slavish support for George Bush's wars. The Labour Party's annual conference in Manchester is where that message, representing the views of the majority of people in this country, can most pointedly be brought home. The TIME TO GO demonstration on Saturday 23 September, organised by Stop the War and CND is generating a huge response across the country. Details of coaches bringing protestors from towns and cities, big and small, are now pouring into the Stop the War office. Local demonstrations and public rallies are being organised by virtually every local Stop the War group, aimed at publicising the demonstration and mobilising the widest support. Tickets for the special London to Manchester train chartered by Stop the War are selling very fast, whether its trade unions booking whole carriages or Stop the War supporters buying individual seats (book yours now if you want to be sure of a ticket). FOR COACH AND TRAIN DETAILS, GO TO http://tinyurl.com/k7jhz Leaflets, posters, badges and T-shirts publicising the TIME TO GO demonstration are now available from the Stop the War office. Visit the Stop the War website to get demonstration updates, details of local public events building support, coaches organised round the country, resources available for publicising TIME TO GO, etc: www.stopwar.org.uk ****************************************** 6) MILITARY FAMILIES PEACE CAMP Military Families Against the War (MFAW) will host a peace camp to coincide with September's TIME TO GO demonstration outside the Labour conference in Manchester. Already Military Families both those who have lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan and those with relatives currently on active service there -- are signing up for the peace camp from around the UK. If you would like to take part in the peace camp, contact MFAW at peacecamp@mfaw.org.uk. If you would like to donate to the appeal fund to help finance the peace camp, you can do so here: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr ****************************************** 6) KEEP UP THE PARLIAMENT RECALL CAMPAIGN Over 140 MPs have signed the demand for a recall of parliament for an emergency debate on the Middle East crisis. Has your MP? If not, contact him/her now. Details of how to do so are here: http://www.writetothem.com/. ****************************************** 8) WHAT PLANET IS GEORGE BUSH ON? George Bush keeps on insisting that Iraq under the US/UK occupation is progressing towards democracy and stability. Here is the reality, as shown in the ever increasing level of attacks on the occupying armies by the Iraqi resistance: When the US appointed an Iraqi Governing Council in July 2003, attacks by the Iraqi resistance averaged 16 daily. When Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003, the average was 19. When the US handed-over "sovereignty" in June 2004, it was 45 attacks daily. When Iraq held its elections for a transitional government in January 2005, it was 61. When Iraqis voted in December 2005 for a permanent government, it was 75. When US forces killed Abu Musab al Zarqawi in June 2006, it was up to 90. The truth is, US and UK troops increasingly stay in their barracks, because Iraq is now one of the least safe and most insecure countries in the world, for the Iraqi people and occupying armies alike, and will remain so until the last foreign soldier is removed from Iraqi soil and the Iraqi people are free to decide for themselves how they want to govern their country and control their own resources. FOR MORE DETAILS OF REALITY IN IRAQ, GO TO: http://tinyurl.com/fwbkl ****************************************** 9) CIVILISATION'S FACE: DEPLETED URANIUM One of the favourite weapons of the invading armies in Iraq is shells coated with depleted uranium. An estimated 130 tons of have been used in the Iraq war by America and Britain. A shell coated with depleted uranium pierces a tank like a hot knife through butter, exploding on impact into a charring inferno. It leaves behind a fine radioactive dust with a half-life of 4.5 billion years. Depleted uranium can enter the human body by inhalation, the most dangerous method; by ingesting contaminated food or eating with contaminated hands; by getting dust or debris in an open wound, or by being struck by shrapnel, which often is not removed because doing so would be more dangerous than leaving it. Inhaled, it can lodge in the lungs. As with imbedded shrapnel, this is doubly dangerous not only are the particles themselves physically destructive, they emit radiation. Thousands of US army veterans, are suffering from crippling conditions, which they insist are due to their exposure to depleted uranium. In Iraq, doctors report significant increases in birth defects and childhood cancers. Depleted uranium also contaminates soil and water, and coats buildings with radioactive dust, which can by carried by wind and sandstorms. In 2005, the U.N. Environmental Program identified 311 polluted sites in Iraq. Cleaning them will take at least $40 million and several years, the agency said. Nothing can start until the fighting stops. We need to remember this, every time we hear George Bush or Tony Blair say they are bringing "civilisation" to the Middle East. -- To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank e-mail to stwc-unsubscribe@lists.riseup.net Tuesday, August 15, 2006 | PermalinkAnti-war movement: Needed more than ever STOP THE WAR COALITION NEWSLETTER No. 2006/33 10 August 2006 Email office@stopwar.org.uk Telephone 020 7278 6694 Web: www.stopwar.org.uk TO KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ANTI-WAR ACTIVITIES ROUND THE COUNTRY, VISIT THE STOP THE WAR WEBSITE: http://www.stopwar.org.uk/ IN THIS NEWSLETTER 1 ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT: NEEDED MORE THAN EVER 2 UNCONDITIONAL CEASEFIRE NOW DEMONSTRATION 3 PUBLIC MEETING: HANDS OFF LEBANON 4 RECALL PARLIAMENT: CONTACT YOUR MP 5 LIMITED EDITION CEASEFIRE NOW T-SHIRT 6 TIME TO GO DEMONSTRATION: TAKE THE TRAIN **************************** 1 ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT: NEEDED MORE THAN EVER The anti-war movement in Britain was never more needed and it has responded with impressive speed and determination in raising its voice over the past three weeks. Two national CEASEFIRE NOW demonstrations attracted unprecedented support for protests called at such short notice -- over 30,000 on 22 July and over 100,000 on 5 August. Dozens of local demonstrations and public meetings have been held around the country, often drawing levels of support not seen at anti-war events since 2003. Over 1000 people a day have been contacting the Stop the War national office asking to be kept informed of our activities. Hundreds of new national members have joined Stop the War in the last two weeks. We have had an excellent response to our emergency financial appeal, which has enabled us to fund at very short notice a series of national events (we still need more, please keep donating). Many local Stop the War groups are reporting a marked increase in new supporters who want to get actively involved. A number of local groups which have been dormant have been revived. Such is the outrage people feel over the mass slaughter of civilians and devastation in the Middle East. This re-energising of the anti-war movement has been very impressive. But we have much to do. At the time of writing, Israel in massing 40,000 troops on Lebanon's border for an invasion, which leaked reports show has been long planned. The US has been rushing armaments to Israel to enable it to perpetrate even greater levels of carnage. The Bush/Blair wars in Iraq and Afghanistan hidden from view by the mainstream media but not forgotten by the anti-war movement are descending ever further into horrific levels of death and chaos. Bush and Blair are escalating their threats against Syria and Iran. This is a pivotal moment. The Bush/Blair wars have brought unimaginable suffering to so many people, brought terrorist atrocities onto the streets of Madrid, London and elsewhere and destabilised the world with potentially devastating consequences for us all. Tony Blair "George Bush's stooge, as MP Claire Short calls him" -- is isolated as never before. The vast majority of people in the country want him to stop his slavish support for the "war on terror". Blair's own party wants him to stop. Most of his ministers want him to stop. Please visit the Stop the War website regularly for information of both local and national anti-war events in the coming weeks, among which is an important Stop the War public meeting on Friday 18 August, at which there will be eyewitness accounts of Israel's barbarism in Lebanon and speakers will include Tony Benn (see below). Details are also given below of the TIME TO GO demonstration in Manchester on 23 September, the eve of the Labour Party national conference, which is attracting enormous support from people across the country. MANY THANKS FROM STOP THE WAR Stop the War wishes to thank everyone who has helped us build our anti-war campaign over the past weeks: the hundreds who volunteered to help the national office plan and organise the demonstrations; the hundreds more who responded to our urgent financial appeal; the thousands who have helped spread the anti-war message up and down the country; and not least the tens of thousands who joined our national and local protests and meetings. Tony Blair would like us to fade out of view. The magnificent response of the anti-war movement at such short notice, shows yet again that while he keeps advocating mass murder, we will keep campaigning to stop him. This nationwide mobilisation is unprecendented for an emergency demonstration called at such short notice. In London itself, hundreds of volunteers have been leafletting tube stations, shopping centres, mosques, churches etc (we still need more help: Call 020 7278 6694). The nationwide outrage at the carnage in Lebanon and Gaza will be expressed by many tens of thousands in London on Saturday. Stop the War has not experienced the level of response it is getting since February 2003, before the outbreak of the Iraq war. Over 1000 people every day are asking to be put on our mailing list to be kept informed of our activities. There is still time to spread the details of the demonstration even wider. Its call has gone to mosques and Muslim organisations throughout Britain. If you have a mosque near you, download the MCB letter from the Stop the War website (http://tinyurl.com/psdzp) and visit the mosque to encourage its members to join Saturday's demonstration, which will unite Muslims with non-Muslims in our common cause of demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza. *********************************** 4) THE INDEPENDENT SUPPORTS THE DEMONSTRATION The Independent newspaper is sponsoring a special, limited edition CEASFIRE NOW T-shirt, created especially for the demonstration by leading fashion designer Katherine Hamnett. Cut out the voucher from The Independent and exchange it for the T-Shirt at cost price at the demonstration. Then wear it on the demonstration so its message is displayed by hundreds of protestors. There will be a stall at Speakers Corner, the demonstration assembly point, for exchanging your voucher. The Independent has also launched a HELP SAVE THE CHILD VICTIMS OF WAR campaign (http://tinyurl.com/r72kl), which reinforces our call for everyone to bring children's shoes to Saturday's demonstration to leave on Tony Blair's doorstep. *********************************** 5) MORE STEWARDS URGENTLY NEEDED All the signs are that our CEASEFIRE NOW demonstration will be much bigger than would usually be expected for a demonstration called in the August holiday period and with barely a week's notice to build it. We need more stewards to help organise on the day of the demonstration. If you can help, please telephone the national Stop the War office on 020 7278 6694 or email your contact details to office@stopwar.org.uk. *********************************** 6) MANY THANKS FOR YOUR DONATIONS We have had the most wonderful response to our emergency appeal to fund Saturday's demonstration and to continue the campaign against the Bush/Blair wars, which they are now threatening ever more loudly to extend to Syria and Iran. Stop the War Coalition would like to thank everyone who contributed and encourage anyone who hasn't to send a donation now. We need to continue raising the level of our opposition to the Bush/Blair wars, if we are to ensure that they do not cause ever escalating slaughter of innocent civilians and the destruction of whole countries. ONLY CHILDREN HERE Israel's war in Gaza and Lebanon is escalating into an international crisis which could soon engulf the whole region. The promise by Bush and Blair in the lead up to the Iraq war that their wars would bring freedom and democracy to the Middle East and peace to Palestine, have yet again been shown to be lies, just as the anti-war movement has consistently said they were. Israel's barbarism in Gaza and Lebanon, in which the world's fourth most powerful military force is systematically destroying the infrastructure of two defenceless countries, killing hundreds of civilians, blockading the supply of food and medical supplies, driving thousands of people from their homes, must stop now. The same motivation which lay behind the illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, drives these latest wars. Israel, supported by its paymaster the United States, is now inflicting collective punishment on whole populations in contravention of all international law. Behind the excuse of seeking the release of three of Israel's captured soldiers lies the long-held US and Israeli aim to attack Syria and Iran, all with the aim of dominating the region which has the world's most valuable resource: oil. As US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said recently, the only way the US sees now to rescue themselves from the catastrophe of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is to extend the conflict to more countries in the region. The consequences of this barbarism are heartbreakingly conveyed by this father in Lebanon: The bomb fell on a small water canal home to 500 Palestinian refugees. Its victims were 11 children taking an afternoon swim in the canal. The first blast left a crater nearly four metres deep, burying many of the swimmers under the orange earth. Ismael, the father of one of the children, sat on the edge of the crater, his head in his hands, weeping. "Children! Children!" he roared through his tears, "Children here! My son here!" He stood and looked down into the crater. "Is Hizbullah here? Only children here." We don't have any rich benefactors, unlike Tony Blair, who, on the very day of the Qana massacre, is swanning around at a Rupert Murdoch gathering, probably expressing pride at standing "shoulder to shoulder" with George Bush and Israel. People everywhere will want to join the demonstration but they have to know about it first. We desperately need the funds to make sure they do and to organise the demonstration. We must make our voices heard. To remain silent would be criminal. Please send us donations large and small. We can make a difference. Blair's own cabinet is split, the Labour Party is in turmoil, the vast majority of British people are outraged. PLEASE DONATE NOW. THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO DONATE: * DONATE ONLINE by debit/credit card: http://www.stopwar.org.uk/new/involved/joinonline.htm * TELEPHONE the Stop the War office (office hours) and make a debit/credit card payment: 020 7278 6694 * BY CHEQUE made payable to "Stop the War Coalition". Over 100 nuclear "bunker busting" bombs have been rushed to Israel, via Prestwick airport in Scotland, with the intention, it must be assumed, to flatten southern Lebanon completely. These are nucleur, uranium tipped weapons. A video showing how destructive these nucleur weapons are can be viewed here: http://tinyurl.com/p43yr TO SEE A CATALOGUE OF ISRAELI ATROCITIES IN LEBANON AND GAZA, INCLUDING THE USE OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS, GO HERE: http://tinyurl.com/nqyrw *********************************** 5) KEEP SENDING NAMES FOR THE TONY BLAIR LETTER Names for the letter demanding that Tony Blair calls for an immediate ceasefire are pouring in. Everyone who is horrified at what is happening can help to bring this carnage to an end. We need the biggest possible turnout on Saturday's emergency demonstration. What you do in the next few days can make a difference. Tony Blair is under the most intense pressure on all sides to detach himself from his master George Bush's catastrophic warmongering and call for an immediate unconditional ceasefire. His party wants him to stop. His cabinet wants him to stop. The vast majority of people in the country want him to stop. Our demonstration can intensify that pressure to breaking point. Stop the War has not experienced anything like it since the run up to the Iraq war in 2003. Over 1000 people every day are contacting the Stop the War office. They want to be on our mailing list. They want to know what they can do to build Saturday's emergency demonstration in London. They want to know where to get leaflets, where coaches are arranged to transport people to London. They want to donate to help fund the demonstration. WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW: WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1 DONATE: We have had the most fantastic response to our emergency financial appeal, from pensioners sending us a few pounds to peers in the House of Lords. But we still need much more to help fund the demonstration and publicise it as widely as we can. Please donate whatever you can big or small. GO HERE TO DONATE: http://tinyurl.com/qvzt5 2 LEAFLET EVERYWHERE: Download the demonstration leaflet from our website and distribute it as widely as you can. Encourage everyone you know to join the demonstration and spread the word among their friends, work colleagues, neighbours etc. Leaflet mosques (we're getting a phenomenal response), churches, community centres, libraries, tube and bus stations. DOWNLOAD LEAFLET: http://www.stopwar.org.uk If you are in London, get leaflets from the Stop the War office: 020 7278 6694. 3 OUTSIDE LONDON: If you are outside of London, find out about coaches in your area on our website. Get together with friends and book a coach yourselves and get everyone you know to buy a ticket. People who know about the demonstration want to be on it and want to know how to get there. There are dozens of coaches already booked from every corner of Britain. More are being booked every day. See our website: http://tinyurl.com/fzq2g 4 IN LONDON: If you live in London and have time to help this week, contact the Stop the War office. We have much to do to ensure that the people of London know about the demonstration and to prepare for Saturday.
