Just what the Middle East needed - an attack on Syria by Israel

It was surely no accident that the intelligence chief of Israel was in Washington, for talks at the Pentagon, on the same day that the Israel's attacks on Syria happened, writes Lindsey German.

Israel launched an air attack on its neighbour Syria on the night of Tuesday and Wednesday this week. When Israel bombs another country then it's big news. And it's rarely coincidental.

So it was surely as they say no accident that the intelligence chief of the Israeli army, the IDF, Major-General Aiv Kochavi, landed in Washington on the same day that the attacks happened, for talks at the Pentagon with the US chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Martin Dempsey.

The US was told of the attack in advance but has so far made no condemnation or criticism of the action. This has been left to the Russians, allies of the Syrian government, who have said that the attack violates the UN charter. Read the full article: http://bit.ly/TqMoKf.

New books: 'The People v. Tony Blair' and 'How a Century of War Changed the Lives of Women'

The People v. Tony Blair

By Chris Nineham, founder member of Stop the War Coalition

Some people dismiss mass protest. The People v. Tony Blair shows the huge demonstrations against the Iraq War in 2003 nearly brought down Blair and almost forced Britain out of the war. Based on interviews and insider accounts, it describes panic in Downing Street and despair in Whitehall. A controversial intervention into the debates about power, media and popular protest, The People v. Tony Blair argues that even a hostile media can be neutralised when a mass movement becomes powerful enough.

A must-read book by a key figure in the movement. Its argument is elegant and essential: Stop the War's protests changed the minds of millions and limited the power of Empire. It is an argument we need if we are to deal with the dangers ahead. -- Tony Benn

The book will be available for the first time at the Ten Years On conference for £7.50 and for £9 (inc p&p) from the Stop the War web site: http://bit.ly/W7I9od.

How a Century of War Changed the Lives of Women

By Lindsey German, convenor of the Stop the War Coalition

How a Century of War Changed the Lives of Women looks at the remarkable impact of war on women in Britain. It shows how conflict has changed women's lives and how those changes have put women at the centre of peace campaigning.

Lindsey German links two major forms of women's involvement in war: as activists opposing conflict and as workers during it. Seen through the prism of women's experience, German tells a fascinating and important story. -- Nina Power

The book will be available for the first time at the Ten Years On conference.
