Afghanistan: Day School, 15th September

Briefing Paper CoverAfghanistan, the Forgotten War

There are now more British troops fighting in Afghanistan than Iraq. Since John Reid, then Secretary of State for Defence sent British Troops into southern Afghanistan in 2006, 56 soldiers have been killed.

Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, has been forced to call for an investigation after 45 civilians were killed in one bombing raid in Helmand province. He has condemned 'extreme use of force' by NATO, particularly air strikes on Afghan villages. Whilst the US and NATO spend $18 billion per year on their war, Afghanistan remains at the bottom of every global poverty ranking.

Day School on 15th September

There will be a Day School on 15th September at ULU in Central London. Given the rising death toll and virtual absence of reconstruction we must make the occupation of Afghanistan a more central focus of our work. Leading campaigners and academics will discuss Afghan history, the role of the Taliban and our role in ending the tragic occupation.

Briefing Paper

Stop the War has produced an Afghanistan briefing paper dealing with the increase in civilian and military deaths and the rampant corruption of American and British companies involved in reconstruction. The briefing can be ordered in bulk at  £5+postage per hundred.
