More than 100,000 people are back on the streets of
London calling for troops out of Iraq and for the
defence of civil liberties in the United Kingdom.
"The marchers today represent the majority opinion of
British, American and Iraqi people who all want troops
home by the end of this year,"said Stop the War
convenor Lindsey German.
"The events in Basra this week have shown that the
occupation is as bankrupt in the British sector as it
is in the American section.
We are united today with the hundreds of thousands of
people demonstrating in the streets of Washingon DC
and other US cities. We are the majority united
against the minority governments of Bush and Blair.".
"We hold Tony Blair responsible for the killings in
Iraq. His hands are covered in blood and no river will
wash them clean.", Haifa Zangana, political prisoner
of Saddam Hussein
"You the marchers here today represent the majority
opinion of Londoners. This is an obscene occupation of
another country." Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London.
"This demonstration today is more representative of
the British people and what they think than the Labour
Government and its Party conference taking place
tomorrow. We are the majority against Bush and Blair's
bombs. These demonstrations fill a public space with
people who represent the views of millions of people
who are against this war and that is why they must go
on." Tariq Ali.
"It is time to stop prosecuting vanity wars and time to
start dealing with the world's real problems. " Brian
Eno
This press release is being sent out as ther rally
continues to take place in the Park. There are many
more speakers, and we will make a further report later
today.
Stop The War will be organising an International
People's Peace Conference in London in December.
