Cairo Conference: 27th – 30th March 2008

The Cairo Conference is a key meeting place for those opposing war and occupation from Iraq, Palestine, Egypt and the international anti-war movement. The event, which has been held for the past six years, brings together delegates from the global social movements, the international anti-war movement, the trade unions, the left and radical parties and the national liberation movement to build links of solidarity between those involved in the struggle against imperialism and neo-liberalism across the globe. Blair may have gone, but the need to build solidarity and resistance has never been greater, as Brown steps into his shoes as a key supporter of George Bush's 'War on Terror' and while US officials increase their war of words against Iran.

In Egypt, 2007 has seen a huge wave of strikes and demonstrations as workers challenge the neo-liberal policies of Bush's ally, the dictator Hosni Mubarak. At last year's conference over around 2,000 people heard speakers from Egypt, Palestine, Europe and Iran.

This year's conference is backed by a wide spectrum of the Egyptian opposition, including the Muslim Brotherhood, the Revolutionary Socialists, the Nasserist Karama Party, the Centre Party, leading human rights groups and anti-torture campaigners and the democracy campaign, Kefaya. The Cairo Liberation Forum will take place alongside the conference. The Forum is an open space, accessible to all who agree on the principles of the conference. In previous years writers and artists, independent workers' groups and trade unionists, the Egyptian Doctors' Union; the Egyptian Bar Association, the Egyptian Journalists Union, independent women's organizations and activists, independent farmers' groups, human rights activists, cinema, theatre and cultural groups have organised events at the Forum.
