The US emerged as an imperial power in the 1890s and has been at war almost continually since then. In the past 60 years America's wars have killed at least 10 million people. The list here is by no means comprehensive:
- Korea 1950-53 At least 3.5 million civilians dead
- Central and South America 1950-? A minimum hundreds of thousands, either directly by US troops or indirectly with proxy death armies, whose officers were trained in the USA.
- Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos 1965 to 1973 At least 3 million.
- Iraq 1990-91 Close to 1 million children killed because of the US embargo after the war and the bombing of Iraq's water and sewer systems.
- Iraq 2003-? The most reputable independent sources estimate a million or more.
- Afghanistan 2001-? No one knows how many because the military doesn't count and doesn't let independent counters in, but at least tens of thousands.
- Somalia 2006-? We don't know, but a large number.
- Pakistan 2004-? We don't know how many but it runs into thousands.
- Libya 2011-? Again, we don't know, but thousands at a minimum, and perhaps many more to come.
This video, with a commentary extracted from A People's History of the American Empire, by the late and very much missed Howard Zinn, explains the reasons for America's endless war against the world, and raises the key question of our time: Empire or Humanity?
We will be there.
Will you?
