The present US / Iran conflict stems from Trumps decision to scrap the nuclear deal and effectively strangle the Iranian economy by imposing hefty sanctions. Senior US foreign policy officials including Mike Pompeo and John Bolton have been extremely clear - regime change in Iran is their objective.
Yet history shows this path is wrong. The West's invasion of Iraq and other Middle East wars have been catastrophic, killing hundreds of thousands of people and displacing millions more. A string of failed states is the eternal legacy, and War with Iran promises greater destruction and devastation. An attack on Iran engaging the powerful Iranian military would almost certainly draw in regional and international powers, risking escalation of a wider and protracted multi-nation conflict.
The alternative to war is negotiations, and the 2018 US-Iranian nuclear deal backed by European powers proves this approach does work. Be in no doubt - Britain will be involved if there is war on Iran.
As the US Government, Arms Industry, and Neo-conservative think-tanks attempt to push Western powers into this deadly conflict, the British people and anti-war movement must hold our government to account. Indiscriminate violence and destruction cannot take place in our name.
