Iraq, Afghanistan, and now "our 30 years war"

General Sir Richard Dannatt, head of the British army, says “we” face "an age of upheaval" and "persistent conflict".

Gen Sir Richard DannattHe says "we" will have more Iraqs and more Afghanistans. Dannat calls it "our 30 years war". Which will mean sending more troops to invade other people’s countries, bringing mass slaughter and destruction.

Who exactly is “we”? Sixty-eight per cent of the British public say in the latest poll that they don’t want more troops sent to Afghanistan, they want them all brought home. This is why Stop the War has initiated a Troops Out Now petition for signing online and downloading.

Just as with the Iraq war, the warmongers are ignoring the view of the majority in this country. Dannatt makes it clear, he thinks Britain is now permanently at war, without specifying exactly who the enemy is.

In Afghanistan for years to come

Dannatt predicts that British forces could expect to be in Afghanistan "for years to come". This in a week which has seen the deaths of six British soldiers, confirming what has long been obvious – Afghanistan is an unwinnable war.

Soldier's coffin
Sent to kill and be killed
The longer foreign troops are in Afghanistan, the more death and destruction we will see, and the more the war will spread across the region, as it is already, with America’s illegal bombing raids further destabilising Pakistan, a nuclear power in the throes of political upheaval.

The worry must be that, with unemployment increasing at record rates -- especially among the young -- school leavers with little prospect of work will be enticed into joining the army, seeing employment to kill and be killed in foreign lands as preferable to a life on the dole. This is what Dannatt is proposing in his “more boots on the ground” policy.

We need urgently a high profile campaign of opposition to any more warmongering by the British government and army generals. The Stop the War Troops Out of Afghanistan petition will be delivered to Downing Street later in the year. This will mark the launch of a campaign of further action on this issue.

Stop the War is asking its supporters to sign the petition now online. We are also encouraging the downloading of the petition for the collection of signatures among friends, relatives, work colleagues, neighbours, fellow students, etc.
