2006: That was the year, that was
2006 was the most active year for Stop the War since 2003, the year of the Iraq invasion. The timeline below gives the key national events, which included four national demonstrations.
FEBRUARY 1: 100 DEAD VIGILS NATIONWIDE
On January 31 the 100th British soldier was killed in Iraq. On February 1, Stop the War groups organised vigils in over 150 towns. »Pictures
MARCH 18: NATIONAL BRING THE TROOPS HOME DEMONSTRATION
National Stop the War demonstration in London, on the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion. Slogans: Bring the Troops Home - Don't Attack Iran. 80,000 from across Britain joined the protest.

MARCH 31:  PROTEST AGAINST CONDOLEEZZA RICE VIST TO LIVERPOOL
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was invited to the North West by then British foreign secretary Jack Straw. Liverpool Stop the War gave her a warm welcome.

APRIL 26: MILITARY FAMILIES LOBBY PARLIAMENT

Cenotaph Military families of soldiers killed in Iraq went to Parliament to demand that Tony Blair meet them. 50 members from bereaved families were joined by families of soldiers serving in Iraq and soldiers who have refused to serve.

MAY 6: DON'T ATTACK IRAN NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
Don't attack Iran events held in Bath, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Coventry, Eastbourne, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Huddersfield, Leeds, London, Newcastle, Sheffield, Southend
JUNE 10: STOP THE WAR COALITION NATIONAL ANNUAL CONFERENCE
660 delegates from hundreds of affiliated organisations, attended Stop the War's fifth annual national conference, more than for any annual conference since January 2003.

JUNE 28: A NIGHT OF CONSCIENCE FOR MALCOM KENDALL-SMITH
MKSFlight-Lieutenant Malcolm Kendall-Smith was sentenced to eight months imprisonment for refusing to return to Iraq to serve in what he regarded as an illegal war. To help pay his legal costs, Stop the War organised Night of Conscience, a benefit concert with performers from the world of film, stage, television and politics.

JULY 22: NATIONWIDE HANDS OFF LEBANON DEMONSTRATIONS
30,000 joined Stop the War's emergency Hands Off Lebanon deimonstration in London on Saturday 22 July. STW Hands Off Lebanon protests were also held in Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Kirkcaldy, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Sheffield and York.
JULY 28: ALL-LONDON LEBANON / GAZA CEASE FIRE NOW PROTEST

Thousands joined Stop the War's Downing Street to condemn Tony Blair's failure to support the call for a ceasefire in the Israeli assault on Lebanon. A letter calling for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon was delivered to Tony Blair.

AUGUST 5: NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION: UNCONDITIONAL CEASFIRE NOW
On 5 August 2006, an unprecedented emergency protest against Israel's attacks on Lebanon and Gaza —called at only one week's notice— brought 100,000 onto London's streets to demand an immediate unconditional ceasefire.  »Reports, video, pictures
AUGUST 18: ALL-LONDON LEBANON MEETING
Lebanese journalist Omar Nachabe presented his video documenting the destruction of villages in south Lebanon as part of Israel's scorched earth policy in July/August 2006.

SEPTEMBER 23: NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION AT LABOUR CONFERENCE

SEPTEMBER 24: STOP THE WAR ALTERNATIVE CONFERENCE
Stop the War an Alternative Conference titled After Blair: Time for Change in Manchester on the day the Labour Party annual conference opened. The conference discussed: The Crisis in the Middle East, Islamophobia and the Strategy of Tension, The Humanitarian and Economic Costs of War, The Media and War

OCTOBER 31: STOP THE WAR PROTEST AT PARLIAMENT
Stop the War protest at parliament as MPs rejected a motion demanding an inquiry into the Iraq war. Shamefully, only 12 Labour MPs voted in favour.

NOVEMBER 11: MILITARY FAMILIES AT THE CENOTAPH

On Remembrance Day, Military families Against the War held a memorial vigil at The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, for all those killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan—whether soldiers or civilians—and read out the names of British and Iraqi dead.

NOVEMBER 18: PEOPLE'S ASSEMBLY: ISLAMOPHOBIA AND WAR ON TERROR
Over 650 delegates from across Britain, representing dozens of organisations, filled the People's Assembly, bringing together peace and anti-war groups, trade unions, faith groups, community groups, political parties and other representative organisations, to discuss how attacks on Muslims are linked to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

The Faslane 365 campaign aims to blockade the nuclear submarine base for a whole year, with different organisations allocated days to cover the blockade. Stop the War was at Faslane on 6-7 November. »Photo
DECEMBER 2: BRIZE NORTON BRING THE TROOPS HOME DEMONSTRATION
Brize Norton is the most important British military base for maintaining the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. It is the main transport base for sending troops and supplies in and out of the occupied countries.
